What is a boucle dining chair? 

Boucle is one of the most comfortable (and popular) dining chair styles available. However, the name ‘boucle’ doesn’t refer to the style of the chair itself, but the material that it is upholstered in. So, what is boucle exactly? The word itself is French, and means loop, with more detailed translations meaning “curled” or “ringed.” The fabric has a fuzzy, nubby effect which is achieved by looping three yarns with different tensions, to create the desired texture.

Boucle has been a popular mainstay throughout different periods, brought to the masses by fashion house Chanel (think of any classic Chanel jacket - it’s probably boucle) and also by Florence Knoll in the late 1940s, who requested that Eero Saarinen create a chair that she could “really curl up in” - little did Knoll know that the renowned designer would take her request so literally and that the texture would go on to become a defining facet of mid-century design.
