Why you should change your bedding in May

Spring is the season of reinvention. With longer days, warmer temperatures and a general sense of optimism in the air, you’ll probably find yourself experiencing the urge to declutter, deep clean and maybe even give some spaces a fresh lick of paint. Another intuitive part of this ‘spring reset’ is the urge to blitz your bedroom. Like an animal emerging from a deep hibernation, the bedroom can often become a dark nest that we retreat to over winter, and spring marks the moment we wish to fill it with light. Essentially, now is the time to throw open those windows and let the fresh air rejuvenate the space.

Below, we’ve considered the top five reasons for a bedding refresh in May, and why our luxury bed linen collection is just what the doctor ordered.

1. Temperature regulation

Us humans have an ideal temperature for sleeping, which sits at around 15.5 to 19 degrees celsius. That might sound cold, but the interesting thing is that our bodies maintain a steady temperature throughout the day before dropping slightly at night, ready for sleep. If a space is too warm, we’re much more likely to wake up drenched in sweat, or struggle to get to sleep at all.

While average temperatures throughout the UK differ, in our native Manchester the average high and low temperatures during April are 10℃ and 6℃ respectively, making for some chilly nights worthy of a heavier tog duvet. In May, this climbs steadily up to 12℃ and 9℃. In June and July, the low temperatures are firmly in the double figures, which is why May is the perfect month to think about changing your duvet and bedding for better temperature regulation.

How to choose the right duvet tog for the season

A duvet tog of around 9 is supposedly a good all-rounder if you don’t want to be swapping out duvets or don’t have the space. While everyone’s individual preferences will differ, we’d suggest the below tog ratings for optimum breathability:

  • 1 to 7 tog: These are classed as ‘low tog’ and are ideal for the hottest summer months, or when that strange thing called a heatwave happens here in the UK and the standing fan comes out of storage.
  • 5+: These are higher tog duvets that are perfect for spring, winter and autumn. You could also consider getting a 2-in-1 duvet which buttons together to provide extra weight and insulation.

You can get to know the ins and outs of duvets a little better in this guide by The Independent.

How does my bed linen affect temperature regulation?

We are so glad you asked. Different fabrics have different capabilities when it comes to air circulation, wicking away moisture and insulation. For example, you wouldn’t wear a full leather suit on the hottest day of the year just as you wouldn’t wear your summer linens on a ski trip - you should treat your bedding in much the same way.

Both linen and lightweight cotton are the best choices for optimal breathability and to wick away moisture - that’s why our bedding collection is made using 100% cotton.

2. Improved hygiene

That breathability and moisture wicking we talk about above? It’s kind of important. While we sleep, the body can produce between 500 to 700ml of sweat (more if you’re battling an infection, taking certain medications or experiencing stress and anxiety or menopause symptoms) which, you guessed it, is directly absorbed by your bedding. Having that breathability and moisture-wicking will help you get a good nights sleep even when your body is under the weather.

By using the ‘spring clean’ mindset to overhaul your bed linen, you’ll be doing your personal hygiene a favour too.

3. Spring is the season of change

For centuries, the New Year was celebrated on the 1st March, until someone (apparently Julius Caesar) decided it wasn’t. Ultimately, being the season of rebirth, budding flowers and blossom, we think it fits the narrative slightly better than dreary old January, but who are we to argue with a legendary Roman emperor. Anyway, our point is, spring should be treated as a celebration, and what better way to bring that new year, new me energy (sorry, Julius,) than investing in a luxury, 100% cotton bedding set.

4. Enhanced sleep quality

It has long been argued that clean, soft and fresh bedding has been proven to improve sleep. In a sturdy carried out by the National Sleep Foundation, around 7 in 10 people insist that they get a better night’s sleep in freshly-washed bedding with a comforting or clean scent. While the exact correlation between sleep, scents and the types of different fibres we choose to sleep in and their relation to good sleep is complex, but one thing we do know is that natural fibres such as linen and cotton are far better at helping to regulate body temperature, which contributes to a good night’s sleep.

5. A wellbeing boost

Better bedding will usually mean better sleep, which has an endless list of advantages including increased brain health, better mood and a stronger immune system. Fresh bedding and a spring-cleaned bedroom can also give our wellbeing a boost in other ways, too. For example, the colour choice of your new bedding.

  • Neutral or stone-coloured bedding has a calm and warm feel. While they are less likely to trigger a dopamine release than more vivid shades, they are exactly what they say on the tin - neutral. These shades are perfect for promoting balance, calm and cleanliness.
  • The colour green has been shown to aid relaxation and stress relief as well as boosting creativity. Green shades also evoke imagery of natural, outdoor environments which have a calming effect on our nervous system.
  • Blue shades of bedding are very similar to green in the sense that they calm, aid relaxation and remind us colours found in nature such as a deep blue sky, a placid lake surface or the sapphire sea.
  • Other colours with the same calming effect include the earthen warmth of terracotta and similar muted reds, pinks and peaches. While the crisp cleanliness of white bedding can boost serenity, too much can feel sterile and cold, so be sure to style it in a soft space or add a coloured bedspread for comfort.
