'Tis the season of slowing down, savouring the moment and trying to enjoy that newfound chill in the air. Essentially, autumn is a time to retreat into our homes and embrace the shorter nights. We’ll shortly be spending a lot more time indoors and craving those cosy comforts we’ve come to associate with September, October and November. Think rich brown and caramel tones reminiscent of hot chocolate and cinnamon, along with tactile textures such as boucle and fur. Autumn naturally lends itself to the aesthetic themes of mid-century modern (think rich teak, burnt oranges and deep-set swivel armchairs) and 70s boho (looking at you, browns, ambers, textured carpets and rattan.)
1. Blankets, Cushions & Throws
It’s Gilmore Girls season, which means you’re officially allowed to binge-watch beneath knitted blankets. Signal a seasonal shift - and update your interior - by swapping out lighter summertime throws for heavier blankets of wool or fleece. Layered fabrics in rich, earthy colours are the perfect way to channel the ‘fall aesthetic’—think rust, ochre, forest green, and deep burgundy. Complement your throws and blankets with lush velvet cushions, like this beautiful Vester Cushion in Warm Havana.
2. Candles
Candlelight is quintessential cosy season. A true non-negotiable for home comfort, candles offer a soft, flattering golden glow that exudes warmth. It’s also great to implement relaxing downtime rituals, like meandering between rooms to light your candles once the nights start drawing in.
3. Clever ambient lighting
Speaking of candlelight, clever rechargeable lamps that can be moved around are great for every season, but especially for autumn. Easy to move around and available in a vast range of styles, a rechargeable lamp can be suited to your aesthetic and moved from space to space to suit your styling - they also make great portable outdoor lights for those al fresco moments during summer.
4. Rugs
A high-quality rug can completely change the room. The perfect signature piece for a living room (which is the most-used space during autumn, FYI,) a rug adds warmth and comfort underfoot, and can also be a great way to incorporate colour or pattern without going bold and brave with paint or wallpaper.
5. Foliage & Autumnal Displays
Adding new touches to your interior doesn’t have to require blowing your budget. For a seasonal foliage display, you could style dried stems and branches in a statement vase. Many of us, when taking our daily mental health walk or exercising the dog, will have seen a particularly nice-looking branch— this is your sign to bring it home.
6. Switch Up Your Bedding
Just as your bed linen deserves some TLC in spring, it may also require changing from the end of September onwards, to account for the drop in temperatures. Swap out your summer duvet for a heavier tog, winter version and treat yourself to some new bedding while you’re at it. Our favourite autumnal shades are our terracotta and moss options, which bring a beautifully earthen feel and are designed to lull you into a serene sleep.
7. Choose a New Mug
What is any season without your hygge habits? Completely budget-friendly and a guaranteed way to make your morning, choosing a new mug for your autumn hot chocolates and pumpkin spice lattes will elevate your everyday and allow you to tap into that fall feeling.
8. Create a Centrepiece
If you have a large bowl on your kitchen island or dining table, you can use foraged things like fallen pinecones and dried leaves to create a stunning seasonal display. Finding the perfect ones could also create a fun afternoon activity with little ones— just add some of those adorable mini gourds to up the autumnal ante.
9. Prioritise Natural Materials
If you are going to invest in some new accessories and items for the home, opt for things crafted using natural wood and fibres like rattan. Not only do these echo calming and neutral tones, but they transition well between seasons and styles, making it a more worthwhile cost and preventing any impulse purchases.
10. Scents
Whether via candles, oil burners or diffusers, one of the easiest, most cost-effective and temporary ways to create an autumnal home is through scent. A delight to the senses, autumnal scents such as cinnamon, pumpkin spice and caramel will give your interior a welcoming feel and will perfectly complement the switch in theme.
